Open water world champion Ashley Twichell (Fayetteville, N.Y./TAC Titans) and National Team member Andrew Abruzzo (Plymouth Meeting, Pa. Plymouth Whitemarsh Aquatics) were victorious in the 1500-meter freestyle Sunday to conclude the TYR Pro Swim Series at Atlanta at Georgia Tech’s McAuley Aquatic Center.

Twichell won the women’s 1500m free in 16 minutes, 8.70 seconds, just over 2 seconds clear of Chile’s Kristel Kobrich. Twichell also was second in the 800m free and third in the 400m free in Atlanta.

“Just wanted to get into it smooth – Sunday morning at 8 a.m. at the end of a four-day meet, so I wasn’t really expecting it to hold up, but I felt pretty good and just went with it and tried to pick it up the last 200,” Twichell said.

Abruzzo took the men’s 1500m free title in 15:13.79, with Zane Grothe (Boulder City, Nev./Mission Viejo Nadadores) earning second in 15:27.32. Grothe posted four top-three finishes in Atlanta, including wins in the 400m and 800m free.

With 30 points after two meets, Grothe sits second in the men’s TYR Pro Swim Series men’s standings, one behind leader and defending champion Chase Kalisz (Bel Air, Md./Athens Bulldog Swim Club). Canada’s Taylor Ruck leads the women’s standings with 33 points.

The six-event TYR Pro Swim Series resumes next month with the TYR Pro Swim Series at Mesa, April 12-15 at Skyline Aquatic Center.
