USA Swimming has just finished up the 2017 National Select Camps.
These past two weekends were filled with excitement at the Olympic Training Center, as 96 of the nation’s best boys and girls ate, slept and trained like National Team athletes.
While at National Select Camp, the athletes learned about a variety of topics, including stroke technique, the Safe Sport program, nutrition, National Junior Team, diversity & inclusion, dryland and more. They heard from USOC’s Senior Director of International Games Doug Ingram, who shared his story about summiting Mount Everest. They also had the opportunity to swim in the Olympic Training Center pool during four different training sessions.
The educational aspects of camp are not to be overlooked, but it’s the relationships built over the three days that really stole the show. All weekend long, the athletes spent every moment together and subsequently developed unique friendships that would last a lifetime. Each of these 96 individuals now share something in common—they are National Select Camp athletes, and it is up to them to elevate the sport, and themselves, to the next level.
Highlights from the weekends also included meeting National Team Athletes Leah Smith and Jack Conger, who shared stories and talked about their own National Select Camp experiences.
Yes, that’s right. Both of these swimmers went to National Select Camp, too. In fact, 65 National Team members were campers at National Select Camp at one time or another. With that in mind, the chances that a 2017 NSC athlete will make the National Team is pretty high.
