Ryan Held, Hellen Moffitt Golden at World University Games

TAIPEI – Olympian Ryan Held (Springfield, Ill./NC State) and National Team member Hellen Moffitt (Alexandria, Va./North Carolina) led the United States with gold-medal performances Thursday at the 2017 World University Games.

Held took home the men’s 100-meter freestyle 48.36 seconds, out-touching Poland’s Kacper Majchrzak for the victory by just two-hundredths of a second. Maxime Rooney (Livermore, Calif./Pleasanton Seahawks/Florida) finished fifth in 49.16.    

Moffitt followed with gold in the women’s 100m butterfly in a time of 58.75 to best runner-up Elena Di Liddo of Italy, who was second in 58.81. Katie McLaughlin (Dana Point, Calif./California Aquatics) was fifth in 59.33.

In other finals Thursday, Kayla Brumbaum (Fredericksburg, Va./NC State) finished fourth in the women’s 200m breast, and Grant Shoults (Laguna Hills, Calif./Stanford Swimming) took fourth in the men’s 800m free.

Through five days of competition, the United States leads all nations with 16 medals – six gold, five silver and five bronze. Full results can be found at www.2017.taipei.
