Jim Ryan is a Group Vice President and Executive Director of the Brandywine Y of the YMCA of Delaware. The Brandywine Y is in North Wilmington, Delaware and serves over 19,000 members. Ryan is a qualified and visionary leader with over forty years of YMCA experience in operations, fundraising, human resources, team building, member and community engagement, program development and facilities management. Ryan started his Y career as a swim coach at the Chester Y in Pennsylvania in 1970. From Chester, he moved to the Upper Main Line Y in Berwyn, PA where he coached from 1980-2000.
Ryan received his BA from Temple University- Psychology 1977, and his MBA & MS- Organizational Development, Effectiveness & Change 2006, University of Delaware. In a volunteer capacity Jim served as Chair of the Delaware Coalition for Healthy Eating and Active Living (DE HEAL) 2013-2016. He is a current Board Member and former Chair of Brandywine-Naamans Rotary, current board member USA Swimming and current member of Y of the USA Council for Competitive Swimming and Diving.
Jim and his wife Carolyn live in North Wilmington. They have three adult children, all of whom swam at the Upper Main Line Y and through college. They continue to serve the Y and competitive swimming by volunteering in meet administration capacities at YMCA Long Course and Short Course National Championships. Jim has a passionate dedication to the YMCA and its’ mission as it is carried out in competitive swimming. His philosophy of leadership has a foundation in the Y’s core values of Caring, Honesty, Respect and Responsibility.
