George Ward USA SwimmingGeorge Ward joined USA Swimming as Director of Risk Management in 2013. He was also elected to the Board of Directors of United States Sports Insurance Company (USSIC), a captive insurance company of USA Swimming. George holds the Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) and Associate in Claim (AIC) designations and is a graduate of Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville.
 
Prior to joining USA Swimming, George was Director of Risk Management and Corporate Compliance for Amylin Pharmaceuticals, Inc., from 2007 to 2012. He was also a board member and treasurer of the San Diego Chapter of the Risk & Insurance Management Society where he received the Heart of RIMS San Diego Chapter Award. Prior to San Diego, George was located in Irving, TX from 2003 to 2007 as Senior Director of Risk Management for VHA, a nationwide network of community-owned hospitals, non-acute facilities, and their physicians. At VHA George received the President’s Award. From 1987 to 2003 George served in various risk management positions at Fleming Companies, Inc., including Senior Risk and Claim/Litigation Manager. At Fleming George received the Chairman’s Award. George also has insurance industry experience with USF&G and AIG and from 1977 to 1987 in in various claims management roles.
 
In his position, George is responsible for a comprehensive and effective risk management program for USA Swimming, liaison with its insurance brokers and claim managers, and supports the organization's Safe Sport program. He will work on insurance and indemnity-related requirements in contracts and other agreements, while helping Local Swimming Committees and member club leaders with risk-management issues. During 2013 George educated the insurance industry about our improving risk profile and implemented a new insurance program that provided increased limits of liability and improved policy terms and conditions at a reduced cost to USA Swimming. He also serves as staff liaison to the operational risk committee.
 
George lives in Colorado Springs, Colorado, with his wife Marsha, and has a daughter and grandchild.
