Meet Records Highlight Night One at 2016 Speedo Junior National Championships

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The 2016 Speedo Junior National Championships opened tonight at the Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center. Michael Andrew (Lawrence, Kan.) and Zoe Bartel (Fort Collins, Colo.) and Johannes Calloni (Jersey City, N.J.) established new meet records.

Andrew earned gold in the men’s 100m breast with a 1:00.08. Devon Nowicki (Lake Orion, Mich.) took second in 1:01.06, and Daniel Roy (Spokane, Wash.) earned bronze with a 1:02.22.

Bartel swam 1:08.11 to win the women’s 100m breast. Bartel’s time was also good for the fourth-fastest time in the 15-16 age group of all time. Olivia Calegan (Lincoln, Neb.) earned a silver-finish with a 1:09.56, and Ema Rajic (Urbana, Ill.) finished third in 1:10.19.

Calloni topped the men’s 1500m free competition with a time of 15:16.62. Aaron Apel (Scottsdale, Ariz.) earned silver with a time of 15:17.60, while Simon Lamar (Sonora, Calif.) rounded out the top three with a 15:22.03.

Dakota Luther (Austin, Texas) posted a dominant win the women’s 200-meter butterfly with a time of 2:10.63. Ashlyn Fiorilli (McKinney, Texas) earned second place in 2:12.46, and Callie Dickinson (Virginia Beach, Va.) followed for third with a time of 2:12.64.

Will Macmillan (Chapel Hill, N.C.) dropped below the two-minute mark to win the men’s 200m fly with a time of 1:59.76. Fynn Minuth (Pittsburg, Penn.) and Carter Grimes (Las Vegas, Nev.) followed with times of 2:00.43 and 2:00.88, respectively.

The top time in the women’s 800m free went to Taylor Ault (Sonora, Calif.) with a time of 8:37.97. Joy Field (Magnolia, Texas) followed for second with a time of 8:38.94, while Erica Sullivan (Las Vegas, Nev.) captured third place in 8:41.52.

The 2016 Speedo Junior National Championships continues through Friday with daily prelims at 9 a.m. CT, followed by finals at 5 p.m. CT.
