Black History Month: Sigma Gamma Rho, USA Swimming Teach Swimming Essentials to Local Students

Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. continues to strengthen its partnership with USA Swimming through the Swim 1922 campaign. Olympians and members of the sorority teach the community about water safety and how to swim. Swim 1922 is hitting the road during the sorority’s five regional conferences. The first stop was the Southeastern Region, specifically Atlanta.

Olympian Maritza McClendon, a member of Sigma Gamma Rho, and other USA Swimming professionals visited Parklane Elementary School in Fulton County. They talked with third, fourth and fifth graders about the basics when it comes to swimming. “It is important because we don't want our children to be a part of the alarming drowning statistics. I have loved swimming since I was a little girl and want children to love water just as much,” said McClendon.

“It exposes the children to things that they do not see every day. It allows them to see someone who looks like them be a role model. It shows them that hard work pays off. That when you dedicate your time to something it can have a big reward. It teaches them also about self-discipline,” said Kendra Fairweather, principal

According to USA Swimming, drowning is the second leading cause of childhood unintentional death for kids under the age 14. Participation in formal swimming lessons could reduce the likelihood of childhood drowning by 88 percent.

“Sigma Gamma Rho is committed to ensuring our youth know about water safety and most importantly, learn how to swim. It is wonderful to engage elementary students and ensure they learn this life saving technique. We will continue to promote participation in our communities by hosting in-water safety workshops,” said Bonita M. Herring, 23rd International President of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority.

Sigma Gamma Rho consists of five regions: Central, Northeastern, Southeastern, Southwestern and Western. The Southeastern Region consists of Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, South Carolina, Tennessee, Bahamas and the U. S. Virgin Islands.
